    CollaborationBus: An Editor for the Easy Configuration of Complex Ubiquitous Environment

    Early sensor-based infrastructures were often developed by experts with a thorough knowledge of base technology for sensing information, for processing the captured data, and for adapting the system’s behaviour accordingly. In this paper we argue that also end-users should be able to configure Ubiquitous Computing environments. We introduce the CollaborationBus application: a graphical editor that provides abstractions from base technology and thereby allows multifarious users to configure Ubiquitous Computing environments. By composing pipelines users can easily specify the information flows from selected sensors via optional filters for processing the sensor data to actuators changing the system behaviour according to the users’ wishes. Users can compose pipelines for both home and work environments. An integrated sharing mechanism allows them to share their own compositions, and to reuse and build upon others’ compositions. Real-time visualisations help them understand how the information flows through their pipelines. In this paper we present the concept, implementation, and early user feedback of the CollaborationBus application

The field was coined in the 1980th by researchers from computer science, information science and social science. In this paper we will briefly introduce CSCW – its concepts and current trends - and thereby focus on the role of Informatics in the field – from application integration to ubiquitous user interfaces

    On anticyclotomic mu-invariants of modular forms

    Let f be a modular form of weight 2 and trivial character. Fix also an imaginary quadratic field K. We use work of Bertolini-Darmon and Vatsal to study the mu-invariant of the p-adic Selmer group of f over the anticyclotomic Zp-extension of K. In particular, we verify the mu-part of the main conjecture in this context. The proof of this result is based on an analysis of congruences of modular forms, leading to a conjectural quantitative version of level-lowering (which we verify in the case that Mazur's principle applies)

    In vitro bioconversion of polyphenols from black tea and red wine/grape juice by human intestinal microbiota displays strong interindividual variability

    Dietary polyphenols in tea and wine have been associated with beneficial health effects. After ingestion, most polyphenols are metabolized by the colonic microbiota. The current study aimed at exploring the interindividual variation of gut microbial polyphenol bioconversion from 10 healthy human subjects. In vitro fecal batch fermentations simulating conditions in the distal colon were performed using polyphenols from black tea and a mixture of red wine and grape juice. Microbial bioconversion was monitored by NMR- and GC-MS-based profiling of diverse metabolites and phenolics. The complex polyphenol mixtures were degraded to a limited number of key metabolites. Each subject displayed a specific metabolite profile differing in composition and time courses as well as levels of these metabolites. Moreover, clear differences depending on the polyphenol sources were observed. In conclusion, varying metabolite pathways among individuals result in different metabolome profiles and therefore related health effects are hypothesized to differ between subjects

    Enhancement of cargo processivity by cooperating molecular motors

    Cellular cargo can be bound to cytoskeletal filaments by one or multiple active or passive molecular motors. Recent experiments have shown that the presence of auxiliary, nondriving motors, results in an enhanced processivity of the cargo, compared to the case of a single active motor alone. We model the observed cooperative transport process using a stochastic model that describes the dynamics of two molecular motors, an active one that moves cargo unidirectionally along a filament track and a passive one that acts as a tether. Analytical expressions obtained from our analysis are fit to experimental data to estimate the microscopic kinetic parameters of our model. Our analysis reveals two qualitatively distinct processivity-enhancing mechanisms: the passive tether can decrease the typical detachment rate of the active motor from the filament track or it can increase the corresponding reattachment rate. Our estimates unambiguously show that in the case of microtubular transport, a higher average run length arises mainly from the ability of the passive motor to keep the cargo close to the filament, enhancing the reattachment rate of an active kinesin motor that has recently detached. Instead, for myosin-driven transport along actin, the passive motor tightly tethers the cargo to the filament, suppressing the detachment rate of the active myosin.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, submitted to PCC
